ISD
LADLE – INFRARED SLAG DETECTOR
The ISD system is designed to detect the presence of slag in the liquid steel flow from ladle to tundish and to minimize slag transfer by immediate closure of the ladle slide gate. The system includes a special Infrared camera which points towards the liquid steel flow at the outlet of the ladle shroud. Therefore, it is required to remove the shroud from the ladle or to lift the ladle itself to expose the steel stream.
Based on special lenses and a dedicated image-processing algorithm, the system detects the presence of slag in the flow by analyzing its different spectral emission with respect to steel. Slag detection triggers an alarm signal, which is used to control the slide gate. The effectiveness of the slag detection algorithm enables early detection of slag presence and time-effective closure of the slide gate, minimizing slag transfer e increasing ladle yield. Furthermore, the ISD system eliminates the need for human presence in the hazardous area close to the ladle, contributing to operational safety.
